Cocktail Dress at Komarov

A cocktail dress can be used for many occasions – almost too many to count. Because, for as many occasions as there are to wear a cocktail dress, there seem to be as many such dresses available to buy. And this is a good thing!

Cocktail dresses seem to straddle the fine line between traditional formal wear and informal wear and are therefore considered semi-formal. And this is their advantage, of course. A great number of modern and contemporary cocktail dresses were intentionally designed so that their wearers could easily leave work directly – dressed as is – and attend an informal gathering, say, at a local bar, and easily enjoy fine dining later that evening, again, without changing a stitch of clothing. Cocktail dresses also seem to be easy to accessorize with as well. Their slinky, easy appearance can easily show off skin that looks great with jewelry and other amazing accoutrement that you may find pairs up nicely with your cocktail dress.

Cocktail dresses vary greatly, of course, as they have over the years. Lengths have ranged from a very lengthy to-the-ankle cut to a much more vibrant and free-flowing pattern that is cut right to the knee. Shoulders have been covered completely, or exposed entirely. Fabrics, too, have ranged from thick wool in the late 1880’s to light and bouncy sheer poly blends.

Many years ago, long before the turn of the last century, a cocktail dress was often referred to as a late afternoon dress, implying that it may very well be worn for an early supper or –in some cases – for aperitifs or drinks just beforehand. Because of this tendency and association with drinking of alcohol. It has become known today as the cocktail dress.

But the cocktail dress has graduated beyond its use as an article of clothing that says “I’m in the mood to celebrate.” In fact, many famous faces of film and even royalty have driven the value and the “face” of cocktail dresses in past decades and again today. Audrey Hepburn wildly popularized the cocktail dress in Truman Capote’s BREAKFATS AT TIFFANY’S. Even the Duchess of Windsor in the mid-century proclaimed her love of cocktail dresses be saying that there is essentially nothing else needed when you’re wearing the perfect one. Today, such illustrious performers as Helena Bonham Carter and Catherine Zeta-Jones have brought the cocktail dress back into the spotlight, having worn them not only for feature premiers and awards ceremonies but also for interviews and informal photographic sessions.

Luckily, cocktail dresses are available for everyone as many top designers have offered their once-unique dresses to large department stores nationwide and worldwide. So now there’s no excuse not to wear a n amazing cocktail dress the next time you go out!
